Library profit calculator
Work out what a paid study library earns before you sign a lease. Enter your seats, the shifts you sell, the average fee and your monthly costs; the calculator shows revenue, profit, the occupancy you need to break even and how long the setup cost takes to recover.
It is a planning estimate, not a quote. For the cost of each setup item, read the library business cost and profit guide.

How the calculation works
- Capacity is seats multiplied by the shifts you sell on each seat. A 60-seat library selling morning and evening shifts has 120 seat-shifts.
- Paying subscriptions are capacity multiplied by occupancy. Revenue is that number multiplied by the average monthly fee.
- Profit is revenue minus rent, salaries, electricity, software and other monthly costs. Margin is profit as a share of revenue.
- Break-even occupancy is monthly costs divided by revenue at 100% occupancy. Payback is the setup cost divided by monthly profit.
Selling the same seat in two or three shifts is the biggest lever on profit, because rent and most staff costs stay the same. The three-shift seat model shows how to plan it without seat clashes.
What study libraries charge
Librify sampled 194 public 30-day plans listed by libraries in 16 Indian cities on the appulibrary.com directory in October 2026. Listed prices are not always what students pay, and some city samples are small, so treat these as a starting point.
| Plan | Plans sampled | Median per month | Middle half |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full day (30 days) | 116 | ₹600 | ₹500 to ₹800 |
| Single shift (30 days) | 78 | ₹500 | ₹400 to ₹600 |
Frequently asked questions
How much profit does a study library make per month?
It depends on seats, shifts sold, fee and occupancy. A 60-seat library selling two shifts at ₹700 a month and 75% occupancy earns about ₹63,000 a month; after ₹37,000 of rent, staff, electricity and other costs that leaves about ₹26,000. Change the inputs above to match your building and city.
What occupancy does a library need to break even?
Break-even occupancy is monthly costs divided by the revenue at 100% occupancy. In the 60-seat example it is about 45%. Libraries in rented premises usually need 40% to 60% occupancy to cover costs, which is why the first three months after opening matter most.
What fee should I enter for my city?
Use what nearby libraries charge for the same shift and facilities. In Librify's October 2026 sample of 194 public 30-day plans across 16 cities, the median full-day plan was ₹600 a month (middle half ₹500 to ₹800) and the median single-shift plan was ₹500. Metro and AC cabin libraries charge more.
How long does it take to recover the setup cost of a library?
Divide the one-time setup cost by monthly profit. A ₹5 lakh setup with about ₹26,000 monthly profit is paid back in about 20 months. Payback is faster with more shifts per seat, lower rent or a smaller fit-out, and much slower if occupancy stays under 60%.
