A full-day seat in a self-study library in a tier-2 or tier-3 Indian city is most often listed at ₹500 to ₹800 a month. We collected 194 listed 30-day plans from 111 libraries in 16 cities to see where most fees actually sit, and how wide the gap is inside one city.

Quick answer

Self-study library fees in the 16 cities we sampled centre on ₹600 a month for a full-day seat and ₹500 for a single shift. That is the median of 194 listed 30-day plans from 111 libraries on public profiles at appulibrary.com, fetched on 27 October 2026. Half of all full-day plans fall between ₹500 and ₹800.

Key findings

  • The median listed full-day fee was ₹600 a month (116 plans from 104 libraries). The middle half ran from ₹500 to ₹800.
  • The median single-shift fee was ₹500 (78 plans from 32 libraries). The middle half ran from ₹400 to ₹600.
  • ₹500 is the most common price by far: 43 of 116 full-day plans (37%) list exactly ₹500.
  • Where a library listed both, a full-day seat cost a median 1.75 times a single shift, not twice as much.
  • Lucknow (₹990) and Indore (₹900) had the highest full-day medians; six cities, including Jaipur, sat at ₹500.
  • Only 18 of 116 full-day plans (14%) were listed at ₹1,000 or more.

How we collected the data

The source is the public library directory on appulibrary.com (Find a Library), where each library profile lists its plans with a price, a duration in days and a shift type. We fetched the profiles on 27 October 2026 from the site's public sitemap, taking every third library profile listed for each city and up to 12 profiles per city.

We kept only plans with a duration of exactly 30 days, so a monthly fee compares with a monthly fee. Plans for 3, 15, 90, 180 or 365 days were dropped, along with one plan listed at ₹0. That left 194 plans from 111 libraries in 16 cities across Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh.

Each plan is either full-day (the profile marks it as FullDay) or single-shift (Morning, Afternoon, Evening or Night). We report the minimum, median and maximum per city, with n, the number of plans behind each figure. A library with three shift plans contributes three plans.

What we did not do: we did not name, rank or contact any library, and we did not use any Librify customer data. Librify is a library management app for private self-study libraries and reading rooms in India. This report uses only prices that libraries have published themselves. The directory belongs to Appu Library, a separate library management app that publishes these profiles openly.

Library fees by city: the table

The table shows listed 30-day fees per city. Read the n column before the median: a city with 2 plans tells you far less than a city with 13.

Varanasi811₹400₹700₹1,00010₹300₹500₹600

Two patterns stand out. Larger cities with a big coaching population, Lucknow and Indore, list higher full-day fees. District towns in Rajasthan (Sikar, Nagaur, Hanumangarh, Bikaner) cluster tightly between ₹500 and ₹800, with almost no plans outside that band. If you run a library in Lucknow (our Lucknow self-study library guide covers the main areas), your competitive range is much wider than in Sikar.

Jaipur is the odd one. Its median of ₹500 matches Sikar's, but its maximum of ₹2,000 is the joint highest in the sample. One city holds both budget halls and premium ones, and the median alone hides that.

Full-day vs single-shift fees

A full-day seat costs a median 1.75 times a single shift. That figure comes from the 25 libraries that listed both plan types for 30 days. The ratios ranged from about 1.2 to 2.75, so some libraries price full-day seats close to one shift and others close to three.

Afternoon shift15₹500₹300₹700
Evening shift15₹500₹300₹630
Night shift9₹400₹300₹550

Most libraries charge the same for morning, afternoon and evening. Night shifts list lower, at a median of ₹400 across 9 plans. Fewer students want a 10 PM to 6 AM seat, so libraries price it lower to fill chairs that would otherwise sit empty.

The 1.75 ratio matters for revenue. A full-day student occupies two seat-slots. If one shift is ₹500 and full day is ₹875, each full-day slot earns about ₹437, less than a shift student. Our multi-shift scheduling playbook shows how owners balance the two.

What drives the spread

Within one city, listed full-day fees can differ by four to six times. The data shows city size and shift length clearly. Facilities do not appear in the profiles in a consistent way, so for AC and cabins we describe what owners usually price for, without a number from this sample.

City tier and coaching density

State capitals with large coaching markets list higher. Lucknow's full-day median is ₹990 and Indore's ₹900, against ₹500 in Gaya and Sikar. Rent explains part of it: a 1,000 sq ft hall near a coaching area in Lucknow costs more than the same floor in a district town, and the fee has to cover it.

AC, cabins and quiet

An AC hall with partitioned cabins costs more to build and run. Our study library ROI blueprint puts wooden cabins at ₹3,500-5,500 a seat against ₹1,800-2,800 for laminate partitions, and the library cost and profit guide shows summer electricity running well above winter bills. Libraries at ₹1,000 and above are very likely charging for those, though the profiles in this sample do not say so consistently.

24-hour access

Round-the-clock seats are rare in this sample. Only 4 of 116 full-day plans list a 24-hour timing, priced between ₹500 and ₹1,300. That is too few to give a reliable premium, so we do not publish one.

The ₹500 anchor

More than a third of full-day plans sit at exactly ₹500. Round numbers are easy to say at the counter and easy to collect in cash. In a cluster of ₹500 libraries, the first owner to add AC and charge ₹700 often fills faster than the one who drops to ₹450.

Mistake we see often

New owners often copy the cheapest library on the street and open at ₹400. At ₹400 a seat-slot, a 50-seat library with ₹40,000 of monthly costs needs every one of its 100 seat-slots filled just to break even. Price from your own costs first, then compare with the street.

Caveats: what this data cannot tell you

  • Small samples. Between 2 and 13 full-day plans per city. Jodhpur has 2 and Kota has 4. One new listing could move those medians.
  • Listed prices, not paid prices. Students often get a discount for paying three months upfront, a referral offer or a festival deal. The listed price is the ceiling, not the average collected.
  • One directory. Libraries that list on this directory may differ from those that do not. Premium halls in Delhi's Mukherjee Nagar, for example, are not in this sample.
  • Facilities unknown. We could not separate AC from non-AC or cabin from open table.
  • A point in time. Prices fetched on 27 October 2026. Fees usually move before exam seasons and at the start of a new academic year.

How owners can use this data

Use the city table as a sanity check, not as your price. The steps below take an evening.

  1. Find your city, or the nearest similar one, in the table. Note the full-day median and the shift median.
  2. Visit or call five libraries within 2 km. Write down each one's fee, AC or not, cabin or table, and opening hours.
  3. Work out your break-even fee: monthly costs divided by the seat-slots you expect to fill. A 50-seat, two-shift library with ₹40,000 of costs at 70% occupancy needs about ₹570 a slot.
  4. Set your shift fee at or above break-even, and your full-day fee at 1.6 to 1.8 times the shift fee.
  5. Recheck in 90 days. If you have a waiting list, raise the fee for new admissions first.

If students already owe you money at the old rate, sort that first; our guide to handling library fee defaulters covers it. For the full set-up and break-even maths, see the step-by-step guide to starting a library.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average self-study library fee per month in India?

In the 16 tier-2 and tier-3 cities we sampled, the median listed 30-day fee was ₹600 for a full-day seat and ₹500 for a single shift. The middle half of full-day plans sat between ₹500 and ₹800. These are listed prices from public library profiles fetched on 27 October 2026, not what every student actually pays.

Which city had the highest library fees in this data?

Lucknow had the highest median full-day fee at ₹990 a month across 13 plans, followed by Indore at ₹900 across 7 plans. Gaya, Sikar, Meerut, Prayagraj, Jaipur and Agra all had a full-day median of ₹500. Samples per city are small, so treat these as indications rather than city averages.

How much more does a full-day seat cost than one shift?

Among the 25 libraries that listed both a full-day plan and a single-shift plan for 30 days, the full-day price was a median 1.75 times the single-shift price. So a library charging ₹500 for one shift typically lists its full-day seat at about ₹850 to ₹900, not double.

Does this data include AC or cabin libraries?

It includes whatever libraries had public profiles in the sample, but the profiles do not state facilities in a consistent way, so we could not split prices by AC, cabin or Wi-Fi. The spread inside each city, for example ₹350 to ₹2,000 in Jaipur, most likely reflects those differences plus location.

Can I use this data to set my library fees?

Use it as a starting range, then check five or six libraries within 2 km of your location in person. Price against what your hall offers and against your break-even number. A 50-seat library with ₹40,000 monthly costs needs 80 of 100 seat-slots filled at ₹500, but only 50 at ₹800.

Price each shift separately and see what it really collects.
