Library Fees per Month: How Much to Charge per Seat

Most owners set their first fee by asking what the library across the road charges, and then subtracting ₹100. That fills seats in the first month and leaves money on the table for years, because raising fees later is harder than starting right.

Quick answer

Library fees per month in India mostly sit between ₹500 and ₹800 for a full-day seat. In Librify's sample of public library listings (October 2026), the median full-day fee was ₹600 (116 plans, 16 cities) and the median single-shift fee was ₹500 (78 plans). Set your price from your cost floor and your local range.

Librify is a library management app for private self-study libraries and reading rooms in India. This guide shows the fee data we collected, how it was collected and where it falls short, and a three-step method to set your own fee for full-day seats, shifts, AC halls and fixed seats.

What do libraries charge per month? The data

Across 16 cities, the typical full-day library seat costs ₹600 a month and the typical single-shift seat costs ₹500. Half of all full-day plans in the sample fell between ₹500 and ₹800, which is the range most owners in tier-2 and tier-3 cities are competing in.

Monthly (30-day) seat fees in Librify's sample of public library listings, October 2026. p25 and p75 mark the middle half of plans.
Plan type Plans Lowest p25 Median p75 Highest
Full-day seat 116 ₹350 ₹500 ₹600 ₹800 ₹2,000
Single shift 78 ₹200 ₹400 ₹500 ₹600 ₹1,600

City medians move around more than the overall number. Lucknow and Indore listings sat near ₹900 to ₹1,000 for a full day, while Gaya, Jaipur, Sikar, Meerut and Prayagraj medians were ₹500. Some cities had only two to five plans, so read the table as a sense of range, not a city price list.

How the fee data was collected, and its limits

The numbers come from public library profile pages on one library directory website, read on 27 October 2026. Each profile lists plans with a price and a duration. We kept only 30-day plans and sorted them into full-day plans and single-shift plans (morning, evening and similar). The result is 194 plans from 111 libraries in 16 cities.

Be clear about what this sample is not:

  • It is listed prices, not what students actually paid. Opening offers, sibling discounts and cash deals do not show up.
  • It is small. Some cities have two plans, and one library can list three shift plans, so a single library can move a city median.
  • It leans to Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru and Hyderabad are not in it, so the sample says nothing about metro fees.
  • AC and non-AC seats, cabins and open tables are mixed together, because most profiles do not say which plan is which.
  • Listings can be out of date. An owner may have raised fees without editing the profile.

Even with those limits, it is more than a guess, and the shape is consistent: most full-day seats cluster between ₹500 and ₹800, and a shift costs less than a full day but nowhere near half.

How to set your seat fee in three steps

Set your fee from your costs first, then check it against the local range, then adjust for what your hall offers. Doing it in the other order is how owners end up running a full library at a loss.

Step 1: find your cost floor

Your cost floor is the lowest fee at which a seat pays its share of monthly costs at a realistic occupancy. The formula is: monthly costs ÷ (seats × shifts sold × target occupancy).

Cost floor for a 60-seat hall with ₹38,000 monthly costs at 80% occupancy. All costs are assumptions for a tier-2 city.
How you sell seats Paid seat-slots at 80% Cost floor per slot At a ₹600 / ₹500 fee
Full-day only 60 × 1 × 0.8 = 48 ₹792 48 × ₹600 = ₹28,800, a loss of ₹9,200
Two shifts (7 AM-2 PM, 2 PM-9 PM) 60 × 2 × 0.8 = 96 ₹396 96 × ₹500 = ₹48,000, a profit of ₹10,000

The ₹38,000 is rent ₹18,000, electricity ₹9,000, one staff member ₹6,000, internet ₹1,500, cleaning and supplies ₹2,500 and software and small items ₹1,000. Put in your own numbers. The table explains why so many libraries in the ₹500 to ₹600 band sell shifts: at that price, a full-day-only hall rarely covers rent. You can run your numbers in the free library profit calculator.

Step 2: check the local range

Visit or call the five nearest libraries and write down their full-day price, shift prices, AC or non-AC, and what is included. Price inside that range. Going ₹100 below the cheapest library rarely fills seats faster than better Wi-Fi or a quieter hall would, and it sets a low anchor you will fight for years.

Step 3: adjust for what you offer

Move up from the local middle for each thing students will pay for, and down only when you are clearly behind on something basic like power backup or washrooms.

Example price ladder for a 60-seat AC library in a tier-2 city. Every figure is an example to adapt, not a benchmark.
Plan Example monthly fee Why
Morning shift (7 AM-2 PM), floating ₹500 Around the shift median
Evening shift (2 PM-9 PM), floating ₹550 Fills first in many libraries
Full day (7 AM-9 PM), floating ₹750 About 1.5× a shift, not 2×
Fixed seat add-on +₹100 to ₹200 Same desk every day
Cabin with partitions +₹150 to ₹300 Privacy and less distraction
Locker +₹100 Optional, keeps floating seats attractive
Three months paid in advance 2.8× monthly About 7% off for commitment

Mistake we see often

Charging a full-day seat at exactly two shift prices. If a shift costs ₹500 and a full day ₹1,000, almost everyone buys a shift and stretches it. Students pay for the guaranteed seat, not the hours, so keep the full-day price near 1.4 to 1.6 times a shift.

How much more should an AC library charge?

An AC seat should cost at least what the air conditioning adds to your bill per paying student. Work it out from two bills: a summer month with the AC on and a winter month with it off. If the difference is ₹6,000 and 48 students pay, the AC costs you ₹125 per student per month.

Round that up to a premium of ₹150 to ₹200 over a non-AC seat and keep the same price all year; students dislike a fee that changes with the weather. If you are buying new units, the BEE star labelling programme shows how energy ratings compare, and a higher star rating lowers the bill you are pricing against.

How to price shifts against each other

Price shifts by how fast they fill, not by how many hours they have. A 7-hour evening shift that sells out in a week is worth more than a 7-hour morning shift that is half empty.

  • Price the shift that fills first ₹50 to ₹100 higher for new admissions.
  • Price a weak shift (often afternoon or night) lower to pull students out of the crowded one.
  • Night shifts need their own costs counted: a night attendant and extra power. The 3-shift seat model works through night-shift numbers.
  • Keep shift timings clear on the receipt so a ₹500 morning student does not quietly stay till 6 PM. The multi-shift scheduling guide covers timing choices.

Fixed and floating seats are another lever. The fixed vs floating seats guide shows how a ₹100-200 fixed-seat premium can add about ₹5,000 a month on 60 seats.

Discounts, offers and multi-month plans

Use discounts to buy commitment, not to fill seats in a panic. A three-month plan at about 7% off brings money in early and cuts the number of renewals you chase. A permanent ₹100 "opening offer" just becomes your real price.

  • Write the offer's end date on the receipt and the notice board.
  • Give multi-month discounts only on full advance payment.
  • Keep a sibling or friend referral discount small (₹50 to ₹100) and one-time.
  • Avoid fee changes in the six weeks before major exams, for example the dates on the UPSC exam calendar. Students under exam pressure leave over small things.

When to review your seat fee

Review your fee every six months, and sooner if one of these happens:

  • Every seat in a shift is sold for two months running, and you are turning students away.
  • Your rent or electricity tariff goes up.
  • You add something students value: power backup, a new AC, cabins, lockers.
  • A new library opens nearby. Compare facilities before you touch price; cutting fees first is usually the wrong response.

For the costs side of the same decision, the library business cost and profit guide lists typical setup and monthly costs.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average library fee per month in India?

In Librify's sample of public library listings (October 2026), the median full-day fee was ₹600 a month and the middle half of plans sat between ₹500 and ₹800. That is 116 full-day plans from 104 libraries in 16 cities, mostly in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh. Metro areas such as Delhi were not in the sample.

How much is a single-shift library seat per month?

The median single-shift plan in the same sample was ₹500 a month, with the middle half between ₹400 and ₹600. That is 78 plans from 32 libraries. A shift seat usually costs 15% to 25% less than a full-day seat, not half, because students value the guaranteed slot more than the extra hours.

How much extra should an AC library charge?

Charge enough to cover the AC power bill per paying student, then round up. If air conditioning adds ₹6,000 a month to the bill and 48 students pay, that is ₹125 each, so an AC premium of ₹150 to ₹200 over a non-AC seat is a reasonable start. Check your own bill for two summer months first.

Should evening shift fees be higher than morning shift fees?

Only if evening seats fill faster. In many libraries the evening slot fills first because students attend coaching in the morning. If your evening seats sell out and morning seats do not, add ₹50 to ₹100 to the evening fee for new admissions, or cut the morning fee by the same amount.

Library fees kitni rakhe for a new library?

Start inside your local range, not below it. Note the full-day and shift prices of the three nearest libraries, check your own cost floor per seat, and price at or slightly above the local middle if your facilities are equal or better. Opening offers should have an end date written on the receipt.

Set per-shift prices and see what each seat earns.
